Co-founder of Our Town Story. If you have any questions about the site, or wish to provide feedback, please visit the Admin forum and post in the appropriate place - we'll do our best to help you out as quickly as we can!

We really want Our Town Story to be an album for your old photos, to fill in the gaps in the history books of our villages, towns and cities. We would also love for those pictures to be able to help others - for instance by using reminiscence therapy in treating dementia

We're still a work in progress, and we appreciate all suggestions and observations!

Image Details

Image taken from 'Illustrated Midland Business Review and View Album. Special edition for the district of East Birmingham, with part of Aston, etc', published in 1897.

Bussell's was based at 199 Great Lister Street. According to the 1881 census, Emily Bussell was already a widow by that time, so it's not clear who the man in the picture is - or the picture is considerably earlier than 1897. The business review listing reads:

"Harry J. Bussell is distinguished as being one of— if not the oldest of its character in East Birmingham. It was founded thirty-five years ago, and has remained in the same family and under the same name during the whole of that period. At the present time the business is undoubtedly one of the best known and most popular in the area covered by these reviews, and Mr. Bussell is entitled to a representative position in the baking and confectionery trade.

The shop in Great Lister Street is an attractive one, being modernly appointed while at the rear, a large bakery offers the best improved facilities for turning out bread, cakes, biscuits, and pastry of the high standard of excellence now required.

Many shops, private houses, and hotels are regularly supplied by Mr. Bussell with his delivery carts and vans, and there needs no stronger proof than the large trade being done to evidence the fact that the goods supplied are of first-rate quality— pure, nourishing, and wholesome.

The long continued success of the business reflects the highest credit on its management, and there is no doubt that an even larger measure of support will be accorded the esteemed proprietor by an appreciative public."
