Personal blogs now available for publishing your own research!

Updates

Have you been carrying out research into a location and feel that the time has come to share it with the world? Maybe you've been looking into your family history and have found information that centres around one place or area.
We've now set up the 'blog' feature on your profile, so that you can bring your findings to a wider audience. It's a fully-featured blogging system, and you can add your own set of categories that fits your work best to make it easy for visitors to sort through your discoveries.
You'll find the 'Blog' tab on your profile homepage - you can get there, as ever, by clicking your user name in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

Bug Reports

Ah - on a very small screen, such as iPhone, it might be below, rather than to the right so that it remains legible.
The speech bubble is there so that you can quote a post in a response, but it shouldn't obscure the text - I'll check the padding.
'Embed local media' - I'll get back to you....

The list immediately to the right of that message contains all the counties and local authorities in the system (under a spurious map of Aberdeen) - it's showing on my iPad...
EDIT: It was timing!

Bug Reports

Hi there,
Yes - I've been looking at today's analytics, and in fact no-one has accessed the home page at all. You can always click the OTS logo to go back home, or your profile name (in the top right hand corner) to go to your personal 'home', but I'm going to put in a 'Home' option as the first menu item, to make it more obvious.
The fora can be accessed by either the 'help' menu dropdown, or, temporarily for iOS, by tapping the 'Help' menu.
The number of places at county level is big, and (obviously) varies hugely, depending on the county. Some form of alphabetically indexed list is the right idea - in fact we have tried out a version not entirely successfully, but one which, once working right, will be a better option than a long scrolling list.

Where's Covent Garden?

Geographic Issues

The places in London are undoubtedly the trickiest to define, as they tend to be loose locales rather than boundaried areas. That said, I think we have now found a way to standardise what we approve for London and what we don't.
So, you will now find Covent Garden in the Westminster list. It's at the bottom for now, but will be in the right place when the Borough page is updated to the new format.

How to add more to a location...

General Support

You can edit the gallery contents after it's been created (either add or remove photos, or update the location, caption, title etc.) from the Gallery tab in your own profile.

Screen size not taken into account

Bug Reports

Good call - we'll try and get far right menus to drop down to the left.
An interim workaround is to click Scotland (as opposed to hovering for the dropdown) and choose county/LA from the temporary iOS full list.

A History of Wimborne in Miniature

Buildings & Places

Found this in an antiques shop in Rochester, near where I live. Great little guide from the fifties/sixties to the Model Town, which is still thriving today!

Private Notes now available

Updates

If you have a matter to discuss that's just between you and another user, you can now use 'Private Notes' to do so.
At present, you can only send a Private Note to someone who has elected to follow you - we may make this available on a more general basis, depending on feedback, although there doesn't appear to be a compelling reason to do so at present.
To send a Private Note, choose 'Private Notes' from your account dropdown in the top right hand corner. Click the 'New Note' button, and then begin entering the username of the intended recipient. You'll be able to choose it from the list that begins to appear.
Enter your subject and message, and then press 'Send'. Your message will be sent to its recipient, who will be notified about it. You can check for received Private Notes in the same place as you send them.

incorrect locations

Geographic Issues

Should be all sorted now - that's exactly the kind of feedback we need - can you let me know that they're ok?
