Co-founder of Our Town Story. If you have any questions about the site, or wish to provide feedback, please visit the Admin forum and post in the appropriate place - we'll do our best to help you out as quickly as we can!

We really want Our Town Story to be an album for your old photos, to fill in the gaps in the history books of our villages, towns and cities. We would also love for those pictures to be able to help others - for instance by using reminiscence therapy in treating dementia

We're still a work in progress, and we appreciate all suggestions and observations!

Image Details

A great Raphael Tuck postcard showing the High Street in Chatham. The Theatre Royal is on the right hand side, just past the junction. The stage house and auditorium of the theatre has recently been demolished to make way for flats.

The foyer remains standing, as in this picture, the only part left of what was once the largest theatre outside London.

Hint: Drag the orange pegman to see the Streetview image...

This image appears in the galleries for the following locations:

Chatham

Frindsbury

Luton

Rochester

This is a strange old postcard - it's identical to one published in 1906 - except for the fact that a large number of advertising hoardings have been added to the street scene in various places.

The most obvious one is on the side of the theatre, but the one in the foreground at the top has, too, along with others further down the High Street. One can only assume they wanted to refresh an old image without taking a new one, but still a bit odd!

You can see the other one here ...
